The Birthday Singer

I was asked to sing at an elderly birthday celebration recently. It was a balmy afternoon at a trendy cafe by the river. There was plenty of activity on the water and a zephyr of a breeze to accompany us through dusk and into the evening... I carried out my final sound checks.

My new speakers were superb, the acoustics were brilliant and as the guests began arriving I opened with a classic Sinatra followed by a Nat King Cole favourite. It was a good start to a promising evening. I received a few assenting nods indicating I was on the right track. I settled into my song list quietly confident of another successful gig.

Unfortunately, it went down hill from there. As the night progressed I searched for a toe tap, a knee slap; even a slight sway to whatever tune i was singing. Alas, there was nothing. In my efforts to attract a response to my well honed act I launched the guaranteed finger tapper while deftly increasing the volume. Still nothing.
It was then I was politely asked to 'turn it down a little' by the cafe proprietor employing one of those apologetic faces. It seemed I was I interrupting the conversation!

The rest of the evening continued in this vein until the death blow when the birthday girl suggested I leave early as the guests were heading home. Ouch!!

And so it goes... perhaps they weren't assenting nods after all.

Onward and upwards!

Tribute Singers' Dilemma

Successful songs are easy to love and difficult to emulate.
So many successful musicians make it big time because of tribulations in their private lives that produce a wisdom, a yearning, a deep understanding of the human condition encapsulated in a seminal song or album that deeply touches the hearts of their fans; see Roy Orbison; Louis Armstrong; Frank Sinatra.

Serendipity plays a huge part  in a song's success. A good song is not enough; a good cause is not enough. The right song perfectly captures the heart of the man on the street that words alone can't do.
These anthemic songs demand an essence or feeling that the writer/singer somehow captured and bottled for it to be sung with any meaning.

I find it beneficial to read about the lives of these iconic musicians; to try and walk a mile in their shoes, to gain a better understanding of where they were coming from so that i can draw on my emotions to do their song justice and give meaning to my listener.

The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Louis Armstrong, The Eagles, Frank Sinatra, Otis Redding all define eras of music that i hope to give modern audiences a better understanding of.

The Best Party Singer in Perth

Chris Ellers blew us away with his performance.  His seemingly effortless performance had everyone dancing from the kids to my grandparents.  His voice was incredible and his songs were perfect for my parent's special anniversary.  His professionalism was second to none. We are looking forward to the next special occasion.  Karen Brand - Cottesloe
